Married Filipino Women Must Bring Marriage Contract to Enter Singapore

Planning to visit Singapore soon? Besides your basic travel particulars, married Filipinas are now required to bring their marriage contract when travelling to Singapore.

This advisory was released by the Philippine Embassy in Singapore last Tuesday (July 24 ) after recent arrests were reported by the Singapore Immigration Checkpoints which involve alleged cases of misdeclaration of married Filipino women on their embarkation and disembarkation documents (cards).

Married Filipino women who had been to Singapore in the past using their maiden names are advised the Philippine Embassy in Singapore to bring their old passport as well as a copy of their marriage contract when entering the country after some time.

To avoid this type of incident, the Embassy advised our married female kababayans to tick the YES checkbox which corresponds to the question: “Have you ever used a passport under a different name to enter Singapore?”

Under this section, the married Filipina traveller is to indicate her complete maiden name, according to the Embassy.

Additionally, the Embassy urged married Filipino women who are now using their husband’s surname to have a copy of their marriage contract as well as their previous passports and travel documents when travelling to Singapore. This also holds true for anyone who has had any information change applied on their travel documents (i.e. passport, etc.) On the basis of a change applied, the traveller is expected to present a copy of their old travel document/s. And in the case of married women, their proof of marriage in the form of a marriage contract will be requested by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore.

In the event that an arrest is made on the basis of the maiden name issue, the Embassy urged our kababayans to immediately request consular access from Singaporean authorities.
