Philippines – A 58-year-old French man learned the hard way that airport security in the Philippines takes every word seriously. He was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 on September 11, 2026, after allegedly claiming he was carrying a gun and a bomb while checking in for a domestic flight to Cebu.
What Happened at the Counter
According to a statement from the PNP Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP), the trouble started at the baggage weighing counter. Staff asked the passenger to place his backpack on the scale and inquired about its contents. He reportedly answered, “I have gun and a bomb.”
Airport personnel didn’t hesitate. The remark was reported right away, setting off standard aviation security procedures across the terminal.
Security Teams Respond
Within moments, several units moved in to handle the situation:
- PNP AVSEGROUP and NAIA Police Station 2 personnel responded to the scene.
- Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Explosive Detection Dog (EDD) teams carried out clearing operations.
- The passenger’s backpack and the surrounding area were checked and declared free of explosives or any incendiary materials.
No actual weapon or bomb was found. Still, the words alone were enough to trigger a criminal case.
The Law He Allegedly Broke
The passenger was arrested for allegedly violating Presidential Decree No. 1727, better known as the Anti-Bomb Joke Law. This decree makes it illegal to spread false information or make statements about bombs and explosives, even in jest.
Authorities informed him of the reason for his arrest and read his rights under the Miranda Doctrine in a language he could understand. He remains under the custody of NAIA Police Station 2, where officers are handling documentation and preparing the appropriate criminal charges.

For Filipinos flying home or heading abroad, this case is a clear warning. What might feel like an offhand comment can quickly turn into an arrest and a court case.
