The first quarter of 2018 is almost up, but have you gone out and about to some of the most colourful and happening events in the city? If you haven’t, then you’re in luck because the National Art Council of Singapore has prepared an exciting series of events to take place at the Civic District on the last weekend of every month.
But let’s not get way ahead of ourselves. Easter weekend is almost upon us and if you have the time to take your friends or the fambam out for a lazy stroll in the area, here are some of our top recommendations on where to take your group:
Free Events in Singapore’s Art District this Easter Weekend
1. Novo Winds @ the Esplanade – (Mar 30, 7:30 pm/8:45 pm/10pm)
If you’re a fan of outdoor concerts, be sure to drop by the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre on March 30 for a night of refreshing music. Witness how our all-time favourite tunes from iconic movies such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “Mama Mia” will be given a new classical rendition by the talented folks from Novo Winds. As advertised, admission is free, so be sure to come in early for this one of a kind refreshing concert event.
2. Saturdays @ ACM: Pho-nomenal Vietnam – (Mar 31, 1-5pm)
Learn more about Vietnamese culture by visiting Asian Civilizations Museum for Pho-nomenal Vietnam. Spend the whole afternoon, immersing in multi-sensorial activities which are both fun and educational, which include going on guided tours around the museum, watching live performances, and joining handicraft sessions to create and appreciate Vietnamese art that you can take home as your souvenir from the event.
3. Tabletop City @ the National Gallery – (Mar 30-31, 10am – 6 pm)
If you’ve been coming to the National Gallery to see art made by people who’ve had plenty of years under their belts, you might want to change it up a little and see the city and new perspectives in life from a child’s eyes.
Tabletop City is a creative playspace where the kids get to create the vision of their ideal Singapore of the future through the use of recycled materials which are all provided for on-site. What’s nice about it too is that you can see your city compound week after week from outputs of other kids and families who join the event.
Music@Empress will be making its return to Civic District for its second edition starting this Easter weekend. This time around, it has a uniquely Vietnamese sound to it. Sing along to the beautiful harmonies by Vietnamese acoustic trio, 16 Second Band (16S), and take in a new kind of sound from a unique Vietnamese instrument known as Đàn đá as performed by traditional instrumentalist Thao.
5. I Light Marina Bay – (Until April 1, 7:30 pm – 12:00 am)
Touted as one of the most stellar events of 2018, the i Light Marina Bay is a fascinating show to the senses as 22 unique light installations from various parts of the world are showcased in various locations in the Civic District including Esplanade Park.
It’s not all about the shine and sparkle because apart from the flashy light installations, there is also an arts bazaar, inflatable animals to play with, as well as the trendy family food spot in Gastrobeats. Don’t miss out on the many Instagram-worthy creations you can check out with the whole group. Admission is free but some attractions may be ticketed, so you may want to check out their website for more details.
