Singapore – Five Filipino nationals were arrested in Singapore after a man reportedly lost more than S$155,000 in cash following an incident near Tang Plaza in Orchard.
According to an AsiaOne news report, which cited a police release, the case happened at about 1.40pm at the underpass near Tang Plaza after the victim had exchanged money at a nearby money changer. The report was published by AsiaOne on Sept. 25, 2026.
Victim Reportedly Targeted After Currency Exchange
Based on details carried in the report, the male victim had just completed a currency exchange before he was approached in a crowded area near the foot of an escalator. He was allegedly bumped by several unknown individuals during the brief encounter.
It was only later that he realized his haversack had been opened and a large amount of cash was missing. The stolen amount was reported to be around SGD155,600.
The case quickly drew attention because of the size of the missing cash and the location of the incident, which is one of Singapore’s busiest shopping districts.
Five Suspects Arrested On The Same Day
Police investigations led to the identification of five suspects described in the report as one male Filipino national and four female Filipino nationals. Their ages were said to range from 31 to 57.
Authorities reportedly tracked them down through follow-up investigations, with the help of CCTV footage and police camera images.
All five were arrested on the same day of the incident, according to the report.
Most Of The Missing Money Recovered
The report added that about S$152,800 in cash was recovered and seized as case exhibits.
That means investigators were able to retrieve most of the money allegedly taken from the victim, although a small portion of the reported amount was not included in the recovered sum mentioned in the report.
The five suspects are set to be charged with theft with common intention.
Penalties And Public Advisory
Under Singapore law, those found guilty of the offense may face a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both.
Police also issued a warning that they will act firmly against such crimes. Members of the public were advised to stay calm if they encounter similar incidents, observe the suspect’s appearance carefully, and seek police assistance as soon as possible.
For Filipinos in Singapore and those visiting busy commercial areas, the case is also a reminder to stay alert when carrying large amounts of cash, especially after financial transactions in public places.
